How I Support and Counsel Families With a Child Newly Diagnosed With SMA

Even with treatments now available for SMA, clinicians must be mindful that we are still giving the diagnosis of a lifelong chronic illness requiring support for both child and family. Here, I share my perspective on how best to support, counsel, and educate families during this challenging period.

Target Audience

This program is intended for neurologists, pediatricians, hospitalists, primary care physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other healthcare professionals who care for patients with SMA.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
  • Identify points of referral to genetic counseling to screen for SMA
  • Assess the safety and efficacy profiles of currently available and emerging agents for the management of SMA
