Target Audience

Primary care physicians, endocrinologists, and other members of the care team involved in the management of obese patients, including nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and nurses.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
  • Describe the impact of excess weight on morbidity and mortality, particularly its effects on metabolic disease and other comorbidities.
  • Discuss how to address barriers to obesity treatment.
  • Select at least two barriers to effective management of obesity in the clinical setting and describe strategies to overcome them.
  • Summarize the current guidelines for obesity management, including lifestyle interventions and pharmacologic therapy.
  • Identify the components of a multispecialty approach to obesity management.

Goal


The goal of this continuing education initiative is to increase the target audience’s knowledge about and competency in managing obesity and developing individualized treatment plans to improve long-term patient outcomes. Participants will also gain a mutual understanding of both clinicians’ and patients’ priorities and decision-making process and accelerate the adoption of shared decision-making practices.
