Screening for Hepatitis B Virus Infection in Nonpregnant Adolescents and Adults

This revised guidance includes a recommendation that asymptomatic, nonpregnant adolescents and adults at high risk for hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection be screened for HBV. This updated recommendation takes into account new evidence showing that antiviral regimens improve health outcomes and reduce incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma and that HBV vaccination is effective at decreasing disease acquisition in high-risk populations. Note that this guideline document pertains only to the nonpregnant population and that the US Preventive Services Task Force has published a separate document recommending screening for HBV infection in pregnancy.
