Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Recall data on biochemical markers that predict disease progression rates and response rates to peginterferon in HBV-infected patients
  • Discuss the efficacy of lactulose for preventing hepatic encephalopathy recurrence in patients with cirrhosis
  • Discuss the ability of total cholesterol, genetic markers, and oxidative stress biomarkers to predict successful HCV treatment with peginterferon/ribavirin
  • Describe response rates with peginterferon alfa-2a vs peginterferon alfa-2b and standard vs individualized treatment durations in HCV-infected persons
  • Summarize how weight-related factors affect the progression of liver disease in HCV-infected persons
