In this treatment update, Eric S. Daar, MD; Martin Markowitz, MD; and Daniel R. Kuritzkes, MD, discuss the important role of the integrase enzyme in the life cycle of HIV, clinical studies of integrase inhibitors, and the use of these agents in managing HIV-infected patients.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Recount the functions performed by integrase in the HIV life cycle
- Describe the results of clinical studies of integrase inhibitors in both treatment-experienced and treatment-naive patient populations
- Discuss the use of integrase inhibitors as part of practical strategies to regain virologic suppression in treatment-experienced patients
- Summarize strategies to simplify therapy in treatment-experienced patients who have achieved virologic suppression with complex antiretroviral regimens
