Zolopa, MD, provide a pharmacologist’s and a clinician’s perspective on the potential interaction between etravirine and raltegravir; Kimberly Y. Smith, MD, MPH, explains how recently published data from the NA-ACCORD may affect clinical practice; Robert M. Grant, MD, MPH, describes a prevention strategy that involves use of antiretroviral agents to block transmission of HIV-1 to persons at high risk; Robert F. Siliciano, MD, PhD, discusses his research on the inhibitory potential of antiretroviral drugs with Andrew R. Zolopa, MD; and Lisa Capaldini, MD, shares her approach to determining when to initiate antiretroviral therapy in her patients.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Cite strengths and weaknesses of 4 case reports of a potential interaction between etravirine and raltegravir
  • Discuss data from the NA-ACCORD that suggest a clinical benefit associated with initiation of antiretroviral therapy at CD4+ cell counts > 500 cells/mm3
  • Explain the potential clinical utility of determining the slope parameter for antiretroviral agents
  • Specify some patient-specific barriers to early treatment of HIV infection
